As design is constantly appropriating itself, I use the discarded imagery of mass consumerism and pop culture to explore the void between design and art through the graphic arts, collage, design, film and sound. In obtaining an understanding of the effect one has on visual culture I find it necessary to think about design beyond a corporate image and work beyond the boundaries of one discipline. Originating as a graphic designer, the context of my work has developed from an on going interest in 20th century pop culture. Inspired by cinema, the celebrity, fashion, industrial design and visual culture, my work depicts the mundane in all facets: objects, daily routine, lifestyle and human interaction. I experiment with abstracted forms and ambiguous imagery to explore the importance of ‘meaning’ and through ironic juxtapositions of imagery my work often contains intangible narratives, themes and concepts.
